What Price Humanity?

03 May

Somebody has just spent seventy-four million pounds on a painting.

One percent of that is £740,000. For many people, that is more than they will earn in their lives.

Art should lift people, make them aware of the intangible wonder that humanity is capable of creating. It has always been valued and attracted a premium.

But £74,000,000?

This is wrong in ways that defy quantification. To me it is a symptom of a society in irreversible decay.

There is no single person on this planet who should have the available funds to spend seventy-four million pounds on anything.
